How this calculator works
For most categories without a Store, eBay charges 13.6% of the total amount of the sale up to $7,500 and 2.35% of the portion above $7,500, plus $0.30 when the order total is $10 or less or $0.40 when it is over $10.
- Total amount of the sale = discounted item price + buyer-paid shipping + buyer sales tax and applicable buyer charges.
- Final value fee = the selected category's percentage or graduated tiers × total amount of the sale.
- Supported no-Store schedules: most categories 13.6%, books/media 15.3%, and trading cards/select collectibles 13.25% on the first $7,500, each with 2.35% above; select heavy equipment 3% on the first $15,000 and 0.5% above.
- Per-order fee = $0.30 when that total is $10 or less; otherwise $0.40. Qualifying athletic shoes at $150 or more use the verified 8% rule and no per-order fee.
- Additional eBay fee is $0 by default. Enter the exact combined insertion, listing-upgrade, promotion, and seller-performance charge from eBay when one applies; the first 250 standard listings each month are otherwise free for sellers without a Store.
- Profit excludes buyer tax from revenue even though eBay uses it to calculate the final value fee.
Worked example
Official-style example: a $400 sale with 6% tax
Assume a $400 item in most categories, no separate buyer shipping, $24 buyer sales tax, and no insertion or upgrade charge.
- The total amount of the sale for fee purposes is $424.00.
- Final value percentage: 13.6% × $424.00 = $57.66 after cent rounding.
- Because the total is over $10, add the $0.40 per-order fee.
- Total eBay fees are $58.06 and estimated payout from $400 seller revenue is $341.94.
If the item cost was $250 with no other seller cost, estimated profit would be $91.94. The $24 buyer tax never becomes seller revenue.
Important exceptions
- Store subscription tiers have different category rates and thresholds. This calculator defaults to no Store or Starter Store rules only where the official table supports them.
- Seller-performance fees are account-specific. The official schedule currently adds 6% for Below Standard status or 5% for a Very High item-not-as-described rate, rising to 7% or 6% respectively after four consecutive months from July 1, 2026. Enter the exact additional fee from eBay's preview or statement rather than assuming it applies.
- Vehicle categories, real estate, classified ads, and other special formats are not represented by the selected product categories.
- Qualifying athletic shoes use a special threshold: below $150 follows the standard rate and fixed fee; $150 or more uses 8% with no per-order fee.
Assumptions used
- The seller is in the US and has no Store subscription or a Starter Store unless an override is entered.
- The category selector matches eBay's actual listing category.
- Sales tax is entered as a dollar amount and included in the final-value-fee basis, but excluded from revenue and profit.
- Insertion, upgrade, promotion, and seller-performance fees are included only when the seller enters the exact additional dollar amount actually charged.

Frequently asked questions
Why does eBay charge a fee on buyer sales tax?
eBay defines the total amount of the sale for final value fees to include applicable sales tax. The calculator includes tax in that fee basis but correctly excludes it from seller revenue.
Does this calculator use eBay Store rates?
No. The defaults cover the verified no-Store or Starter Store schedule for the listed categories. Store subscribers should override the percentage with their applicable official rate.
When is the eBay per-order fee $0.30 instead of $0.40?
The published fee is $0.30 when the total amount of the order is $10 or less and $0.40 when it is over $10.
Are promoted listing fees included?
Not automatically. Promotion charges depend on campaign type, attribution, and ad rate. Enter the actual advertising amount as a seller cost when it applies.
