How this calculator works
Most categories use 8% commission on final item sale price. Payment processing is 2.9% of total order value plus $0.30. Current limited-time rules reduce commission to 0% on the portion above $1,500 for Coins & Money, selected collectibles, Bags & Accessories, and Jewelry & Watches.
- Item revenue = final sale price − seller-funded discount. Commission excludes buyer shipping and tax.
- Commission = 8% of item revenue for other categories; Coins & Money uses 4% up to $1,500 and 0% above; selected collectibles, Bags & Accessories, and Jewelry & Watches use 8% up to $1,500 and 0% above under the current limited-time rule.
- Payment processing = 2.9% × (item revenue + buyer shipping + buyer tax) + $0.30 per purchase.
- When Whatnot handles the buyer shipping charge, that charge affects processing but is not treated as seller revenue. Actual seller shipping expense remains an editable cost.
Worked example
Whatnot's official $50 sale example
Assume a $50 item in an ordinary 8% category, $5 buyer shipping, $3.70 buyer tax, and a $20 item cost.
- Commission: 8% × $50.00 = $4.00.
- Total order value: $50.00 + $5.00 + $3.70 = $58.70.
- Processing: 2.9% × $58.70 + $0.30 = $2.00 after cent rounding.
- Total Whatnot fees are $6.00 and estimated item payout is $44.00.
After the $20 item cost, estimated profit is $24.00. The buyer's $5 shipping charge is included in processing but not counted as seller revenue in this Whatnot flow.
Important exceptions
- The reduced commission above $1,500 is labeled limited-time by Whatnot, and the public page does not provide an end date. Verify high-value sales against the current fee page.
- Eligible sellers in Whatnot's Sell More, Earn More test can receive a lower account-specific commission based on rolling sales. The calculator cannot determine enrollment or tier; use the advanced commission override from Seller Hub.
- Whatnot calculates fees for each purchase even when purchases are later bundled for shipping.
- Special promotions, bonuses, payment disputes, refunds, giveaways, and category reclassification can change actual earnings.
- Commission rates differ between Coins & Money, the listed collectible groups, and all other categories.
Assumptions used
- The order and seller are in the US and the category selected matches Whatnot's classification.
- Buyer shipping is handled by Whatnot and is therefore a processing-fee input rather than seller revenue.
- Fees are calculated for one purchase, not a later combined shipment.
- The current limited-time high-value promotion remains active on the official page at the last-verified date.

Does Whatnot charge commission on shipping and tax?
No. Commission is based on final item sale price. Payment processing uses total order value, which includes buyer shipping and tax in the official example.
Why is buyer shipping excluded from Whatnot seller revenue?
The calculator models the official example in which Whatnot handles the buyer shipping charge. Shipping still increases processing fees but is not item earnings paid to the seller.
How does the $1,500 high-value rule work?
For currently eligible categories, the ordinary category commission applies to the first $1,500 and 0% applies only to the portion above it. Payment processing still applies to the full order.
Are bundled purchases charged as one transaction?
Whatnot says fees are calculated for each purchase, even when purchases are bundled for shipment. Model each purchase separately for the closest estimate.
